First Energy and Carbon Report for NPH

News Date:
Monday, December 4, 2023

NPH has demonstrated our commitment to sustainability with the release of its first Energy and Carbon report.

The report describes how a 30% reduction in carbon emissions has been achieved, exceeding our short term carbon reduction targets. This represents a significant step in the organisation’s sustainability journey and demonstrable progress toward reducing our environmental impact.

We have made progress in reducing the carbon footprint of our business by being smart about how we procure energy and improving energy efficiency of our services. Some key contributions to our carbon reductions include:

  • Efficiency improvements to some of the large communal heating networks
  • 90% of NPH electricity needs procured and supplied through a Green Tariff, certified under the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme
  • 20% reduction in the volume of fly tip waste collected by the Estate’s Services team

Progress towards net zero

West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) have made a commitment to the UK100 Net Zero pledge, to cut emissions of the Local Authority to net zero by 2030, and for WNC residents and businesses to be net zero carbon by 2045. NPH has a key role to play in helping WNC meet these targets as a management agent to the Local Authority and a significant stakeholder in the local economy. Our future plans will include:

  • Continually seeking to minimise energy consumption and increase our capacity for renewable energy generation such as solar PV
  • Supporting WNC on a feasibility study looking into potential development of a Northampton low carbon heat network.
  • Transforming our vehicle fleet to be zero carbon, aiming for the NPH fleet to be diesel free and zero carbon by 2030.

Paul Tucker, our Sustainability Manager said: “I am extremely proud of our carbon emission reductions over the past three years. We’ve exceeded our targets but we’ve still a long way to go in our journey to net zero carbon. I strongly believe that net zero carbon is an important and achievable ambition that will make NPH a better business, and will improve the lives of our customers.”
