Help to pay your Council Tax bill

If you're struggling to pay your Council Tax bill, you may be able to get a reduction or help to pay your bill. 

Find out more about:

  • Council Tax reductions if you're on a low income or benefits;

  • Discounts if you have a live-in carer, or someone in your home has a disability; and

Do you have a low income or receive benefits?

If you have a low income or claim benefits such as Universal Credit, you may qualify for a council tax reduction.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be on a low income; and
  • Be named on the Council Tax bill.

If you meet these criteria, you can apply to West Northamptonshire Council for a Council Tax reduction. When you apply, they will take into account:

  • The money you and your partner have coming in, including earnings, some benefits, tax credits and occupational pensions;
  • Your savings and your partners savings;
  • Your circumstances, including age, the ages and size of your family, any disabilities and whether anyone who lives with you could help you with your Council Tax.

Do you live alone or just with under-18s?

If you’re the only adult in your household, you can get a discount of 25% on your Council Tax bill.

Remember to cancel the discount if another adult moves into your home.

Do you have a live-in carer, does someone in your home have a disability or a severe mental impairment?

You may be eligible for a discount if you have a live-in carer, someone in your home has a disability, or someone who lives with you is ‘severely mentally impaired’.

Council Tax hardship payments

If you are experiencing exceptional financial hardship and struggling to pay your Council Tax, you may be able to claim some help with your Council Tax bill. This isn’t a cash payment, but a credit to your Council Tax account.

The hardship payments are managed by West Northamptonshire Council, and the decision to award a payment is at their discretion.

You may be asked to provide evidence, which could include asking for evidence of your income and expenses.
